Bloomsburg and Millville Receive Grants for Innovative Water Projects

(HARRISBURG) – Grants designed to help finance improvements to existing sewage facilities and drinking water systems through innovative or new technologies have been awarded to two Columbia County communities, according to State Sen. John R. Gordner.

The Bloomsburg Municipal Authority and the Millville Borough Municipal Authority will each receive over $264,000 under the Department of Environmental Protection’s program that funds projects that improves the efficiency of existing systems through new technology.

"The program encourages use of state of the art technology that reduces pollution, conserves water and reduces energy consumption," said Senator Gordner.

Bloomsburg will install a continuous backwash filter that will reduce nutrients from the municipal sewage system into the Chesapeake Bay watershed, while Millville will install membrane filters that will protect groundwater that supplies the water system from surface water infiltration.

The Department of Environmental Protection funds the program through the Growing Greener II program that was approved by the General Assembly and by the state’s voters through a bond referendum.
